MUSHROOMS · IN THE FRIDGE

4–7 days

Four days in the refrigerator, seven at best. UC Davis calls mushrooms very perishable, giving them three to four days at room temperature and about a week with refrigeration. Cold roughly doubles the window, which makes the fridge non-optional rather than merely better.

Leave them in the paper or the vented punnet they came in. A sealed plastic bag traps moisture against them.

These are quality windows drawn from published UC Davis storage research — an estimate of how long produce stays good, not a safety date. If the package carries a printed use-by date, that date governs.

Near the end of the window?

Cook them. Mushrooms are mostly water and cooking drives it off, so a batch that is starting to look tired reduces down into something that keeps several more days in the fridge and freezes properly. Sautéed mushrooms are a better use of day-five mushrooms than any raw preparation.

Ranges are as published. Treat the short end as your real window — grocery produce is already days past harvest, and a cooked dish starts its clock at the stove.

Pip, the Savery squirrel, looking unimpressed

Looking up your groceries one at a time is a hobby. A bad one.

Savery scans your grocery receipt and tracks these windows for everything you bought at once. The spinach, the strawberries, the milk you forgot about — all on one shelf.
