LEFTOVERS · IN THE FRIDGE

3–4 days

Three days is the safe plan, four is the limit. USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service puts most cooked leftovers at three to four days refrigerated — and the detail that catches people is when the counting starts. That window runs from when the food was cooked, not from when it went in the fridge. If dinner sat out for ninety minutes first, the clock had already been running.

These are quality windows drawn from published USDA food-safety guidance — an estimate of how long food stays good, not a safety date. If the package carries a printed use-by date, that date governs.

Near the end of the window?

Freeze it inside the four days, not on day six as a rescue. Frozen leftovers hold their best quality for roughly two to six months, but freezing late doesn't undo the time already spent.

Cooked food is the hardest thing in a kitchen to track because it arrives with no label and no purchase date — a container looks identical on day two and day nine. Writing the date on the lid is unglamorous and works. We went deeper on the two-hour rule and why shallow containers matter in how long leftovers actually last.

Ranges are as published. Treat the short end as your real window — grocery produce is already days past harvest, and a cooked dish starts its clock at the stove.

Pip, the Savery squirrel, looking unimpressed

Looking up your groceries one at a time is a hobby. A bad one.

Savery scans your grocery receipt and tracks these windows for everything you bought at once. The spinach, the strawberries, the milk you forgot about — all on one shelf.
